Picked a bone from the river headed downstream.
I took it as a gift from whomever picked it clean.
Sometimes, man, that's all you get - a big used to've been;
and that's one thing that still chews me up
is about Angeline.
So long, Angeline.
It took me a half of my life to realize you'd loved me.
Now that you're gone it might take me the rest to come clean,
so I'm warning you just one more time to stay out of my dreams.
Now and then you and I would have our fights
where we'd cut up or split up and find someone else for a night.
Did you want me honest or just wanted me out of spite?
Well, it didn't feel so wrong, I guess, but it didn't feel right.
The things folks in town say about me -- they're all true.
I go drinking alone and fall out chasing after the moon.
I've been begging around corners and trying locked handles of doors.
And I've been mistak(en)ing you for someone I should be looking for.
So if you've got any more bones to pick, then you pick them with me
or else we'll keep moving along like a well-oiled machine.
But you don't have to look too close to see i'm just running on steam
(and the one thing that still steams me up...)
So long, Angeline.
It took me a half of my life to realize you'd loved me.
Now that you're gone it might take me the rest to come clean,
so I'm warning you just one more time to stay out of my dreams.
